Our favorite grapes from this region:

In 1966, David Lett planted the first post-Prohibition Pinot Noir vines in the Willamette Valley right here in what's now the Dundee Hills. In 1975, his Eyrie Pinot placed second in a Paris tasting against top Burgundies, and Oregon wine was on the map. Dundee has been the center of it ever since.

The defining feature is red volcanic Jory soil, iron-rich, well-drained, and moderately fertile. It's what gives Dundee Pinot its classic profile: cherry, raspberry, strawberry, bright acidity, silky tannins, elegance. This is Pinot that tastes like Pinot should, if your reference point is Burgundy.

The hills form a circular landmass running north-south, sheltered from ocean storms by Yamhill-Carlton to the west and Columbia Gorge winds by the Chehalem Mountains to the north. That protection makes it slightly warmer and drier than neighboring AVAs, consistent growing conditions, ideal for slow ripening. Vineyards sit between 200 and 1,000 feet on gentle slopes overlooking the Willamette River.

Established as an AVA in 2004, Dundee is now the most densely planted region in Oregon. 2,220 acres across 98 vineyards, 28 wineries, 32 tasting rooms. Domaine Drouhin, Archery Summit, Sokol Blosser, Ponzi are all here. If you're only visiting one AVA in Oregon, this is probably it.

visiting dundee hills

Dundee is the easiest entry point into Oregon wine country. Highway 99W runs straight through it, tasting rooms are dense, and the big names are all within a short drive of each other. Most are open daily May through November.

The flip side is it gets busy. Summer weekends can feel crowded in a way that works against the whole point of being here. Go midweek or visit in spring if you want breathing room.

Stay at The Dundee Hotel if you want to be central to everything. Eat at Red Hills Market, casual, unpretentious, exactly the vibe you want after a day of tasting.
